Episode 94: Being Yourself is a Kind of Magic Trick, Isn’t It

Sleight of hand, and twist of fate. Today's my birthday and I feel so filled with joy at all the kindness I see in my friends, family, and even the world around me. I know it's a scary time for so many people, but what we can control is ourselves, our mindsets and keeping ourselves well enough to keep living, keep trying. I think a lot about what it means to be myself, and I think it's a kind of magic trick. I'm not here, and I wave my hand and appear. I can't wait to see what the next year brings, and thank you endlessly for being you, the greatest gift of all.

Watching a horse run up to you in a field, petting their warm neck, looking into their eyes.

Laying on your bed listening to the wind outside, not doing anything in particular, simply breathing.

Traveling light, packing up a backpack and heading off for a weekend.

The way my stomach does a flip when I hear your sweet voice.

The TV show Fleabag, and everything Phoebe Waller Bridge writes, in general.

Lighting a new candle, the warmth and scent filling the room.

Discovering a new part of your own town, marveling at how nice it is.

The perfect sweater.

Falling asleep reading on the couch in the afternoon, waking up just as it’s beginning to get dark.

When someone wants to tell you something funny but they end up laughing too hard to even get it out.

Wooden soled clogs, the satisfying sound they make as you walk down a hallway.

Seeing someone else with just beautiful hair, how gorgeous it is to you, you stop and stare.

Helen Mirren in a bathing suit.

Other people at coffee shops, imagining their little study groups or business meetings, wondering what they’re up to today.

Someone lifting you up and cracking your back, it just feels so good!

Danish furniture.

Walking through vineyards in the heat of the day, the smell of warm grapes rising in the air.

Watching an episode of TV from a show you loved as a little kid.

When something you cook turns out better than the recipe and you just can’t believe it.

Reading something that reminds you how short life is, and letting that propel you to do more, be more, live more.
